A Journey Guided by Heart: Why a Private Driver was Key to Our 100-Year Return

I initially intended to include our transport experience as a footnote in my ancestral village recap, but the level of service we received deserves its own dedicated entry. As Frequent Independent Travelers (FIT), my husband and I are used to total autonomy. Whether it’s navigating the fjords of Norway or the breathtaking scenery of Iceland, we typically prefer self-driving and making our own way. Very rarely do I feel the need for pre-arranged transport. However, with an 85-year-old elder in tow and the high-stakes agenda of an ancestral village visit, I knew this trip required a different approach.
The Logic Behind the Hire
By the time I looked into transport, our travel details were more or less finalized: our village details were confirmed (read how we managed to trace our village in one month here), and our flights and accommodation were already booked four months in advance to avoid the May Day price surge.
While Didi (China’s ride-sharing giant) is a budget-friendly option, it had limitations for our specific needs:
- The Headcount: Didi vehicles in this region typically cap at 4 passengers; our group was 5.
- The Consistency: I wanted the same driver throughout the trip for familiarity and to avoid the exhaustion of re-briefing a new person every morning.
- The Pace: We knew we wouldn’t be “maximizing” a car in terms of mileage—much of our time would be spent stationary at the village or attractions—but for Gung Gung’s convenience, the investment was non-negotiable.
Finding a Service You Can Trust
The challenge isn’t finding a car for hire; it’s finding a person you can trust with your deposit and your family’s safety. I had looked at Klook, but mixed reviews and the uncertainty of getting a consistent driver made me hesitant. I eventually narrowed it down to two quotes: one direct-to-driver from Xiaohongshu and another from a Facebook China travel group where Xuān Ní (萱霓) of Shuxin Holiday (舒心假期) was tagged on a transportation post by another traveler.
I initially wavered over a 650 Yuan price difference and was already confirming directly with the other driver, but I was still contemplating booking with Xuān Ní. In my line of work—which includes a “client service” component—it takes someone who services clients well to recognize that quality in someone else. Discussing it with my husband, he gave me the final nudge: “Go with Xuān Ní. A better service warrants the difference. If you feel you prefer to book via her, go with her and don’t worry about the price difference.”
It was a decision worth every cent.
Review: A Journey Guided by Heart – Shuxin Holiday (舒心假期)

We have been thoroughly blessed on our 100-year ancestral root-seeking journey, and engaging Shuxin Holiday for a 7-seater van ensured our trip was smooth sailing. I was deeply impressed with Xuān Ní from our very first interaction; she was responsive, understanding, and never pushy. She tries responding to messages as soon as she can, including evenings and weekends, though I tried to keep to daytime weekday interactions for her sake.
Unlike some companies that might resist self-planned elements, she went above and beyond—even verifying my self-booked hotel to ensure our two rooms were conveniently located on the same floor. She explained that sometimes guests’ direct bookings are not properly secured, resulting in a last-minute lurch, so she ensures the rooms are confirmed even if she didn’t book them. Crucially for us as Overseas Chinese, she provided invaluable local input on cultural etiquette for ang paos, gift-giving, and the specific fruit offerings required for ancestral prayers (read my detailed gift and ang pao guide here).
Highlights of her dedication:

- Personal Welcome: She personally greeted us at the airport upon arrival, despite it being a late evening arrival during a public holiday.
- Flexibility: When I encountered issues with international card transfers on Alipay, she graciously met us on our final night to facilitate a cash payment.
- Above & Beyond: She managed our tight budget with extreme understanding, even arranging for our group to be in one car for airport transfers to stay within my limits.
More Than Just a Driver: Master Tang (Táng shīfù) 唐雄秋

Master Tang 唐雄秋 was equally exemplary and fundamental to Gung Gung’s comfort throughout the journey. His proactive nature was a constant highlight; once, he would drive ahead to anticipate our route while we explored on foot, ensuring we never had to double back to a previous drop off point—a small detail that saved Gung Gung significant energy.

He consistently went above and beyond his duties. When he dropped us off at the bustling Guiyan Bai Zhou (桂园白粥) for lunch, he didn’t just leave us at the curb. He parked and walked us into the crowded restaurant to ensure we secured a table and understood how to order their famous Chaozhou-style white porridge. It ended up being the highlight meal of our entire trip.

One morning, we intentionally started late to allow Gung Gung some extra rest, which left us in a race against time to reach the Chen Cihong Former Residence. Although we told Master Tang it was okay if we missed the 10:30 AM Yinggae Dance, he persisted. Thanks to his dedication, we arrived just in time, and he even assisted us in collecting the discounted tickets Xuān Ní had arranged. Gung Gung later cited the Yinggae Dance as a major highlight of the journey—a memory we surely would have missed without Master Tang’s commitment to our experience.
Navigating Tradition: The Ancestral Village

In the absence of a formal guide, Master Tang stepped into a critical role during our village visit. He became much more than a driver; he was our pivotal liaison with Bridge Uncle, coordinating everything from pickup times to lunch arrangements with ease.
Beyond the logistics, his local wisdom proved invaluable. He coached me on the delicate etiquette of our final gift distribution, suggesting I entrust the gift sets to Bridge Uncle for communal sharing rather than attempting to distribute them all myself. He also shared his perspective on the tradition of ancestral hall (praying) contributions; hearing about the typical annual amounts from a local helped us settle on a meaningful contribution for this first—and likely rare—return to the village.
Gung Gung was deeply moved by Master Tang’s kindness and his attentive care toward our family. For me, our daily chats were a personal highlight—a beautiful way to immerse myself in the local culture while putting my Mandarin to the test. As a wonderful bonus, we never had any issues with smoking or a lingering smoke smell in the car, which made the long drives much more comfortable for everyone.
Other Services
Guides who serve as interpreters (fluent in English) are also available for hire. I opted out since my Mandarin is passable and I am fluent in Cantonese, but the option is there for those who need it. Xuān Ní also secured us discounted entry tickets to the Chen Cihong Former Residence.
If you’re not the self-planning type, I highly recommend letting Xuān Ní handle the full itinerary for you. While I am a meticulous planner and had already booked our accommodations far in advance to secure early-bird rates, she still took the initiative to provide hotel suggestions that perfectly fit our needs.
Even though my bookings were cancellation-free, I decided to stick with them to avoid adding any more complexity to our logistics—especially given the separate data and scheduling issues I was already navigating with our airline. However, seeing the quality of her recommendations gave me full confidence that she can handle a start-to-finish trip for those who prefer a more hands-off approach.
Final Thoughts
There are many small gestures Xuān Ní performed—and unexpected generosity—that I won’t list here, as I’d hate to set impossibly high expectations. Service is a reciprocal relationship; how you treat others with courtesy and respect is what you receive in return. We were glad to share our blessed ancestral fruit offerings with both Xuān Ní and Master Tang, and we even set aside a specific gift set for her early on. While I budgeted for tips for the driver as per standard practice, we also gave Xuān Ní an ang pao because she truly deserved it—a blessing from the elder for exemplary service.
While I usually don’t post photos of my face, I’ve included here (though slightly blurred) to show that this is a legitimate review. Trust your gut—it led us to a truly wonderful experience.
