Mid-Autumn Festival Gifting: Finding Modern Mooncakes at Bakery Hut
Whenever we head back to my husband’s hometown in Chachoengsao, we like to bring along something thoughtful from Bangkok—especially brands and items that aren’t easily available outside the capital city.
With the Mid-Autumn Festival coming up on Friday, September 25, 2026, bringing mooncakes along for our trip in late August was the perfect fit. Because the festival follows the Chinese lunisolar calendar (celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month), the exact Gregorian date shifts every year.
Since my husband’s aunt will likely appreciate good traditional treats, I wanted to find mooncakes that were unique, high quality, and tailored to everyone’s tastes—from the young to the not-so-young! While major hotel brands are highly recommended and I’ve tried a few over the years, we didn’t want to give “cookie-cutter” gifts that felt overly formal or impositional.
The Search: Heritage Classics vs. Modern Favorites
My initial thought was to pick up imported Custard Lava mooncakes from Hong Kong MX (which also offers low-sugar options) or mooncakes from Holiday Pastry, a popular Bangkok-only dessert shop with beautiful packaging that the younger relatives would recognize.
I also researched famous heritage bakeries known for traditional recipes, such as Mooncake Bang Lumpoo (ขนมไหว้พระจันทร์สูตรโบราณ เจ้าเก่าบางลำพู) and Kim Lui (ร้านกิมหลุย). However, traditional heritage bakeries often operate on strict pre-order schedules. Mooncake Bang Lumpoo’s pop-up booths in shopping malls weren’t opening early enough for our travel date to Chachoengsao, and Kim Lui’s Facebook page has been inactive.
Ultimately, I stumbled upon Bakery Hut—a shop that offered the perfect middle ground! They produce hand-crafted mooncakes with over 100 non-duplicate flavors to keep tradition alive for newer generations. As someone who isn’t typically a huge mooncake fan myself, their creative flavors and softer, modern dough immediately appealed to me, even as I wrestled with whether to stay strictly traditional or embrace the contemporary route.
Bakery Hut: Contemporary Flavors for the Whole Family

Bakery Hut’s mooncakes are a modern evolution of the classic recipe. They retain traditional craftsmanship while introducing creative, lower-sweetness fillings that appeal to both younger generations and traditionalists:
- Soft, thin dough packed with generous, real-ingredient fillings.
- Balanced flavor profile: Fragrant, distinct, and not overly sweet.
- Extensive flavor menu: Includes fruit, tea, coffee, Thai dessert-inspired, and premium options (including vegan and vegetarian selections) utilizing both local and imported ingredients.
What really caught my attention was their Golden Longan Espresso—their best-selling flavor! It felt like the perfect customized pick for my husband’s cousin and his wife, who run a local coffee stall. (They also carry ultra-experimental options like Mango with Sweet Fish Sauce / มะม่วงน้ำปลาหวาน, though I decided that one was a bit too creative for my personal taste!)
What We Ordered (Size Small: ~50g / 4.6 cm)

The standard mooncake size in Bangkok is typically around 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter and weighs between 140 to 150 grams. While traditional full-sized mooncakes can feel heavy and hard to finish, Bakery Hut offers a mini option (~50g / 4.6 cm) alongside their large option (~125g / 7 cm).
We opted for a box of 8 mini-sized mooncakes to sample a wide variety:
- Golden Longan Espresso (Best-Seller)
- Butter White Malt
- Durian with Egg (Traditional essential)
- Rose Lychee Berry
- Miyazaki Yuzu Orange
- Matcha Green Tea Walnut
- Tiramisu
- Black Truffle Macadamia (Premium)
☕ Tasting Tip: To fully appreciate contemporary mooncakes, enjoy the aroma before taking a bite, savor the layered fillings slowly, and pair them with hot tea to bring out the subtle herbal and nutty notes!
Smart Shopping: Storefront vs. E-Commerce Hacks
While Bakery Hut has a physical shop accessible via MRT Sam Yan or BTS Surasak, ordering online turned out to be the ultimate budget saver!
They offer same-day free delivery for orders placed before 12:00 PM via Shopee. Standard regular prices are advertised around 160 THB for Small and 225 THB for Large, but e-commerce platforms frequently run early-bird vouchers and promotional discounts.
💡 Shopping Pro-Tip: Have a local family member check out your online cart! When I loaded the items on my account, the total came out to 1,165 THB. My husband checked out the exact same order using his local account with access to local discounts and vouchers, bringing the final price down to just over 800 THB!
We hope our relatives in Chachoengsao enjoy these carefully selected treats (and that the taste lives up to our high expectations!). We can’t wait to share them over tea during our visit.
