Transferring Your Thai Extension of Stay and Re-entry Permit: A 2026 Guide

With international travel on the horizon and my second-year Non-Immigrant O extension looming in May, I had to execute a high-stakes administrative dance: renewing my passport and “linking” my stamps without voiding my current permission to stay.

While some foreigners use both the old and new passports simultaneously for travel, those on annual extensions must transfer their stamps before applying for their next yearly renewal.

Step 1: The Mandatory Embassy Letter (Malaysians)

Photocopy 5 baht at Malaysian Embassy Bangkok

While the US Embassy ceased “Linkage Letters” in 2023, the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok still mandates them. Thai Immigration will not touch a Malaysian passport without this document.

  • Location: Malaysian Embassy, Sathorn (Now back at Sathorn Gardens; no longer at Kronos Tower).
  • Requirements: Bio-pages (both books), visa and extension pages, and the latest entry stamp from your new book.
  • Fee: 200 THB | Processing: 2 working days (e.g., Submit Friday, collect Tuesday).
  • Pro-Tip: Arrive with your own photocopies. The embassy charges 5 THB/page, whereas local shops are usually 1 THB.

Step 2: The “Office of Origin” Rule

You must perform the transfer at the same office that issued your current extension. For most Bangkok residents, this is Chaengwattana (Building B).

  • Section L: The hub for Visa Extension for Personal Purpose, including stamp transfers.
  • The Airport Trap: While you can transfer a re-entry permit at the airport in an emergency, it is high-risk. If the specific “Transfer Officer” is unavailable, you could be stuck. Aim for Chaengwattana at least a week before flying.

Step 3: The Stamp Transfer Process (Section L)

Head to Section L with your “Insurance Folder” of documents:

  1. Request for Stamp Transfer Form: Available at the counter.
  2. Original Embassy Letter: Essential.
  3. Signed Photocopies: Bio-pages (both books), latest arrival stamp, current visa/extension, TM.47 (90-day), and TM.30 receipts.
  4. TDAC Confirmation: Print your Thailand Digital Arrival Card confirmation.
  5. Financial Proof (Retirement Only): Present your bank book showing compliance since your last extension. Update it at the bank that morning.

The Timeline: I arrived at 9:00 AM (32 people in the queue), was called at 10:50 AM, and received my passport at 11:10 AM. What to Expect: There is no fee. You will receive two stamps: a Thai-language stamp referencing your old book and entry details, and an English “Extension of Stay” transfer. Note: This takes up two full pages, so plan your “page real estate” accordingly!

Step 4: Moving the Re-entry Permit (Section C2)

Once Section L is finished, immediately get a new queue number for the Re-entry Permit (REEP).

  • If issued at Chaengwattana: Go to Section C2.
  • If issued at the Airport: Chaengwattana may refuse to touch it, forcing you to do it at the airport re-entry counter right before your flight.
  • The Wait: I grabbed a queue number at 11:11 AM (11 people ahead) and was called at 11:30 AM. I had to wait through the 12:00–1:00 PM lunch break, finally collecting my passport at 1:10 PM.
  • What to Expect: No fee – provide bio-pages (both books). Your Re-entry Permit will be moved to your new book, occupying one full page.

💡 The 2026 “Domino Effect” Checklist

A new passport number triggers a chain reaction in the Thai digital ecosystem:

1. Bank KYC (Critical!) Under the Bank of Thailand’s 2026 “Mule Account” crackdown, visit your branch with both passports immediately. If your banking app doesn’t match your new passport, your account or mobile app may be frozen within 48 hours of your next transaction.

2. SIM Cards & NBTC Rules All foreign SIMs now require “Liveness Detection” (facial recognition). Visit an AIS, True, or dtac shop to update your info. If your SIM is linked to an old passport, you may lose access to OTP codes—effectively locking you out of your banking app.

3. The 90-Day “Reset”

A new passport often “breaks” the digital link with the online reporting system. You should expect to do your first 90-day report in person to properly sync your new digital profile and ensure the database is updated with your new document details.

The Mail-In Option: If you prefer to avoid the office later, the officer also confirmed that reporting by post remains a valid alternative, provided you include a complete set of signed photocopies of all relevant documents.

The “Early Sync” Hack: The officer confirmed that you don’t need to wait for your reporting window to open. You can go to the counter to update your new passport information even before your reporting due date.

Pro-Tip: During your stamp transfer, ask the officer to perform a “dummy” report to force a system sync. Note that this is handled at a separate counter (the 90-day reporting section), so you will need to pull a different queue number once your stamps are transferred.

4. Digital Wallets & Apps Update your info on TrueMoney. For the driving license, simply keep a copy of your old bio-page and the transfer stamp in your glove box until your next renewal.

Not Your Typical Tourist

A passionate advocate for independent and solo travel, I traded life in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the vibrant streets of Bangkok, Thailand. This shift is all thanks to a "chance encounter" in 2009 that led to marriage with my Thai husband. I currently split my time between Bangkok (my main base) and Kuala Lumpur for family—documenting the unique blend of a Malaysian life lived abroad.
