The RM 13 KLIA Hack: A Budget-Friendly Alternative to the KLIA Ekspres

When traveling between Kuala Lumpur and the airport, most of us default to two options: a ride-hailing app or the KLIA Ekspres.

The KLIA Ekspres is undoubtedly the gold standard for speed—a direct, 28-minute dash from KL Sentral. But at RM 49.50 (discounted online) or RM 55 (standard fare) per person, it’s a pricey convenience. If you’re traveling with a partner, a car to your doorstep is usually more economical. However, since I was traveling solo this time, I tested a “cheap hack” that keeps nearly RM 40 in your pocket.

The Route: MRT + KLIA Transit

By breaking your journey at Putrajaya Sentral, you bypass the premium “airport city” pricing. Here is the breakdown:

  1. MRT (Putrajaya Line): From TRX (Tun Razak Exchange) to MRT Putrajaya Sentral.
    • Time: ~35 minutes.
    • Cost: RM 3.60 (Cashless) / RM 4.20 (Cash).
  2. KLIA Transit: From Putrajaya & Cyberjaya station to KLIA T1.
    • Time: ~17 minutes.
    • Cost: RM 8.50 (Online) / RM 9.40 (TNG).

Total Cost: RM 12.10 – RM 13.60 Total Active Travel Time: ~52 minutes (excluding waiting time).

The Comparison: Is it worth it?

  • The Savings: You are spending roughly RM 13 vs. RM 50+. That RM 37 saving is enough for several rounds of local street food!
  • The Time Trade-off: The active travel time is comparable to a car ride. However, the “bummer” is the frequency; the KLIA Transit at Putrajaya Sentral runs every 30 minutes outside of peak hours. If you just miss a train, your total journey could stretch to 80+ minutes.

Crucial Logistics & Fine Print

The transfer at Putrajaya Sentral is seamless. You do need to tap out of the MRT and into the KLIA Transit station, but the ~3 minutes walk is short and signposted.

Wait! Before you tap in:

Touch ‘n Go card – min. balance of RM 20 is required for entry
  • Cashless payment: There are different payment methods: credit and debit cards, e-Wallets, mobile payment, Touch n Go’ (TNG) Card, etc.
  • TNG Minimum Balance: If you are using a Touch ‘n Go card, ensure you have a minimum balance of RM 20. The gates won’t open for the KLIA sector otherwise.
  • The 90-Minute Rule: Your KLIA Transit ticket is valid for 90 minutes from the moment you tap in to the moment you exit at the airport. If you exceed this (e.g., by hanging around the station too long), you may be charged the full fare of the entire sector.
  • Travelcards: If you’re using specific travel passes, ensure they are activated before entering the station.

The Verdict

I specifically chose to stay near TRX for its direct access to the Putrajaya Line, making this hack incredibly easy. If you are a solo traveler and not in a desperate rush, this is the most efficient way to save money without sacrificing the comfort of a train.

Not Your Typical Tourist

A passionate advocate for independent and solo travel, I traded life in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the vibrant streets of Bangkok, Thailand. This shift is all thanks to a "chance encounter" in 2009 that led to marriage with my Thai husband. I currently split my time between Bangkok (my main base) and Kuala Lumpur for family—documenting the unique blend of a Malaysian life lived abroad.
