My Matcha Reawakening: Diving into the Hype at Seven Suns

When my husband, who usually steers clear of food trends, told me about Seven Suns Matcha, I knew I had to investigate. He passes by their CentralwOrld location daily, so his eyes told him about their popularity by its sheer volume of customers.

Matcha, I remembered, had already had its moment in the sun years ago, even back when my team members in Malaysia were absolutely crazy for it. Back then, my own attempts at joining the matcha craze fell flat; it just wasn’t for me. I do like the usual hot green tea, but matcha is too intense, as I remember. And watching Han Mei, the owner, talk about it here, makes me realize it’s like coffee vs. espresso. Espresso has always been too intense for me, so perhaps the matcha attempt I had was too much a shock taste to the system. But with its undeniable trendiness, I decided it was time for a reintroduction.

My husband, ever the guide in this unexpected culinary detour, suggested their Signature Matcha and ordered that for me. Priced at 155 baht, the menu described it as “rich, blended, and slightly sweetened.” As I watched the barista work their magic, I observed water, milk, and syrup being meticulously added to the vibrant green matcha powder – a careful ‘blending’ process that promised a smooth, inviting concoction.

My husband, still wary, eyed the finished drink, “Is it…milky?” he asked, a hint of skepticism in his voice. But for me, this reintroduction was surprisingly delightful. I found myself genuinely enjoying the drink, a smooth and subtly sweet experience that made me rethink my past indifference. I’d definitely be open to giving matcha another go, especially if future encounters are as pleasant as this one.

While we savored our drinks, the steady stream of customers was evident. It was a fascinating mix of locals and foreigners, all drawn to the allure of Seven Suns. It’s clear this isn’t just a fleeting fad; they’ve built a loyal following since their inception in 2015.

A Second Sip: Visiting the Seven Suns HQ

After my first visit to the CentralwOrld branch, I seized the opportunity to visit their headquarters since my niece and I were in the Phra Khanong area. From BTS Phra Khanong exit 3, we easily found a song taew waiting. I asked the driver to alert us when we were near Pridi 14, as I wasn’t familiar with the area. The driver let us out in front of ร้านลิ้มก๋วยจั๊บเยาวราช (Lim Kuay Chap Yaowarat Restaurant), and the ride cost a very reasonable 10 baht per person.

From there, we walked further up the street, took the pedestrian bridge to the opposite side, and walked into Soi Pridi Banomyong 14. We found the BePositive building, where the HQ is located, right next to Holey Mothership Bakery.

I ordered the same Signature Matcha, but my niece, wanting to try something without milk, went for the Usucha (160 baht). This option comes with coconut water and fresh coconut flesh. After checking their social media and seeing that some dessert items were unavailable, I learned they have a rotating seasonal menu. Hopefully, I’ll have better luck on a future visit! We settled on their mochi (120 baht) instead, opting out of the ice cream they also have on the menu. My niece found the shop’s temperature to be just right, but I thought it was a bit warm.

Unlike their other locations, this is likely the only Seven Suns branch that feels like a proper café, complete with seating. I’d definitely consider coming back, especially if they release a new seasonal menu available exclusively at the HQ. I still thoroughly enjoyed my second matcha, and it was great to see my niece enjoying her matcha with the fragrant coconut water.

A passionate advocate for independent and solo travel, I traded life in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the vibrant streets of Bangkok, Thailand. This shift is all thanks to a "chance encounter" in 2009 that led to marriage with my Thai husband. I currently split my time between Bangkok (my main base) and Kuala Lumpur for family—documenting the unique blend of a Malaysian life lived abroad.
