First Time Trying Smash Burgers: EZ Smash Arrives at The COMMONS Cloud 11

I had been wanting to try a viral smash burger for a while now, but never got around to it—until I finally had my very first one at EZ Smash, located inside The COMMONS Cloud 11.

While looking for a bite to eat during a visit to Cloud 11, I discovered this smash burger brand originating from Amsterdam and The Hague, known for its signature crispy-edged patties. EZ Smash officially launched its Bangkok location on the 4th floor of Cloud 11 on July 16, 2026, making it a brand-new addition to the city’s food scene.

The Great Smash Burger Debate

The food world is sharply divided when it comes to smash burgers:

Why Smash Burger Lovers Adore Them

  • Lacy, Crispy Edges: Pressing the beef thin on a blazing-hot griddle creates an intensely caramelized, crunchy exterior through the Maillard reaction—the chemical process that occurs when proteins and sugars in food are heated, producing rich, savory flavors (think seared steak crust or toasted bread).
  • Maximum Flavor Integration: Thinner patties allow layers of melted cheese to fuse directly into the folds of the meat.
  • A Quick, Non-Greasy Bite: The thinner profile makes them much easier to handle and eat compared to a thick, messy burger.

Why Critics Dislike Them

  • Less Interior Juiciness: Pressing the patty flat cooks it well-done quickly, which can mean losing that medium-rare center.
  • Over-Reliance on Toppings: Critics argue ultra-thin patties lose distinct beef flavor, forcing places to rely heavily on sauces and pickles.
  • The Hype & Value Factor: Some feel the trend allows kitchens to serve less actual meat while charging premium prices.

My First Impression & What We Ordered

So, am I Team Smash or Team Classic? Honestly, I appreciate both for different reasons—the irresistible crunch of a smash burger, and the thick, juicy bite of a classic-style patty. However, my immediate takeaway from this first experience is that a double patty is an absolute must for a smash burger to get the right meat-to-bun ratio. I’ve never felt that strict requirement with a thick, traditional burger!

We ordered the House Smash Burger Combo:

  • House Smash Burger: Stacked with house sauce, grilled onions, pickles, lettuce, and melted American cheese (289 THB).
  • Combo Upgrade: +129 THB for hand-cut fries and a drink (we opted for water).
  • Total: 418 THB

💡 Ordering & Visitor Tips:

  • Add an Extra Patty (+80 THB): Definitely consider adding a second patty to get that complete, balanced smash burger experience.
  • Fries Upgrade: You can upgrade your fries to curly fries for +20 THB, which seems to be a popular pick among diners! I stuck with the standard hand-cut fries, and they were genuinely delicious.
  • Payment Method: When we visited in early August, credit card payments were not yet accepted as they had just opened. Hopefully, card terminals will be up and running soon, but bring cash or promptpay just in case!

If you are curious about trying Netherland’s crispy smash burgers in Bangkok, it’s a fun and delicious stop when exploring Cloud 11!

Not Your Typical Tourist

A passionate advocate for independent and solo travel, I traded life in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the vibrant streets of Bangkok, Thailand. This shift is all thanks to a "chance encounter" in 2009 that led to marriage with my Thai husband. I currently split my time between Bangkok (my main base) and Kuala Lumpur for family—documenting the unique blend of a Malaysian life lived abroad.
