The Big Bad Wolf is Back in Bangkok! (Celebrating 10 Years of Affordable Books)

The Big Bad Wolf is back in Bangkok! I remember the sheer excitement when the Big Bad Wolf first launched in Malaysia. It was like a cultural phenomenon—a legendary 24-hour book sale where my siblings and their spouses, my nieces, and I made that pilgrimage year after year, despite the venue being located really far away from where we stayed.

We would usually plan our visits for off-peak hours, often making late-night runs with to escape the horrendous traffic and parking chaos. As book lovers, they treated it like a mission, and I happily tagged along for the ride. As a Malaysian, I’ve always felt a special sense of pride seeing the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale thrive globally, knowing it is Made by Malaysians!

Founded in 2009 in Malaysia by BookXcess creators Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng, the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is a global roaming book fair driven by a powerful social mission:

  • Reading Advocacy: Targeting lower-income groups and regions where English or general trade books were historically expensive or difficult to find.
  • Fostering a New Generation: Introducing children and families to books early—using a friendly character-based name to make literature feel fun and non-elitist.
  • High-Volume Model: Leveraging bulk buying and sourcing excess inventory from international publishers to drastically cut prices compared to traditional high-street bookshops.

🐺 Core Background & Mission

  • Origins & Global Footprint: Originally sourcing excess and remaindered stocks from BookXcess and international distributors, the sale has since traveled to 34 cities across 13 countries, shipping millions of books per event.
  • Discounts & Pricing: Books are sold at deep discounts ranging from 60% to 95% off retail prices, with clearance selections starting as low as 20 Baht.
  • Classic Deals & Nostalgia: Beyond standard bins, past editions featured daily door-busters and early-bird perks (like the first 20 daily customers getting THB 100 vouchers for English books with a minimum spend of THB 1,800). And who could forget the legendary Hot Box deals in Malaysia? For RM 99.90+, you got an all-you-can-fit flat-rate box where you could cram in as many books as possible—provided the box closed flat and the flaps weren’t artificially extended! Back then, I used to haul home massive stacks, but after a few years of realizing some books sat unopened on shelves, I eventually stopped buying altogether.

🇹🇭 The Big Bad Wolf in Bangkok

  • Venue Evolution: Muang Thong Thani is the original historical venue where Big Bad Wolf held its very first sale in Thailand in 2016 (and returned in select years during downtown renovations, including 2025). In recent years, it moved to central urban locations closer to downtown—such as The Market / Platinum Pop. (As I mentioned in my Doulos Hope blog post, buying books here is undeniably more affordable than anywhere else!)
  • Local Partnership: Operated in Thailand in collaboration with local partners like Plan For Kids Co., Ltd. and regional organizers.
  • Massive Scale: Events regularly feature over 1 million books, spanning English and Thai titles, children’s literature, fiction, non-fiction, business, and hobby guides sourced from over 40 publishers.
  • Milestone Celebration: Bangkok recently celebrated its 10th-anniversary event from October 2–13, 2026, hosted at Platinum Pop.

🚶‍♀️ My Walkthrough & Practical Tips

When I dropped by on a weekday morning right when the doors opened, I was glad to see both locals and foreign visitors making their way through the aisles. Trolleys are provided for shoppers. I started on the M Floor and spent a full 1.5 hours browsing without even making it down to the G floor—there were simply too many books and items to look through! While I didn’t buy anything and left for lunch (since I’ve mostly switched to borrowing books from libraries and no longer wish to accumulate physical copies), the sheer variety is staggering.

Pricing, Tags & Promotions

  • How Pricing Works: Some books clearly display their retail price; otherwise, look for a paw tag or reference selling price written inside the book or matched against price display boards.
  • Tiered Discounts: Spend THB 1,200 get THB 60 off; spend THB 1,800 get THB 150 off; spend THB 3,500 get THB 350 off.
  • Returning Customer Perk: Spend THB 1,800 and receive one THB 100 voucher valid for next-day purchases.
  • Students & Educators: Enjoy 5% off with a minimum purchase of 3 books upon showing your ID at checkout.
  • Member Deals & Extras: Exclusive BBW member discounts feature items starting as low as THB 60, alongside toys discounted by up to 40%.

🧥 A Quick Tip: The venue can get quite chilly! Even though it wasn’t overly crowded on a weekday morning, I found myself putting on a light sweater after walking around for a while.

How to Get There from BTS

  • From BTS Chit Lom (Exit 6): Walk toward Gaysorn Village, pass through the Gaysorn Walk pedestrian bridge, walk past Big C, and continue straight to Platinum Pop. The sale is located at the other end of the Ground and M floors, right past the food courts.

The sale runs until October 13—do hurry before it ends if you want to snag some incredible deals. With so many genres represented, I am certain there is something for everyone!

Not Your Typical Tourist

A passionate advocate for independent and solo travel, I traded life in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the vibrant streets of Bangkok, Thailand. This shift is all thanks to a "chance encounter" in 2009 that led to marriage with my Thai husband. I currently split my time between Bangkok (my main base) and Kuala Lumpur for family—documenting the unique blend of a Malaysian life lived abroad.
