Stepping Into 1933: A Morning at Bangkok’s 93-Year-Old Legend, On Lok Yun

On Lok Yun (ออน ล็อก หยุ่น) is one of those iconic Bangkok institutions that I should have visited a long time ago.

Stepping through the doors around 8:00 AM on a quiet weekday, we were instantly transported back in time. We were warmly welcomed by Uncle Chang (Sombat Thayanukul), the third-generation owner of this legendary coffee shop. He took the time to personally walk us through their most popular menu items, kindly letting us know we could customize and order our breakfast combination in any way we liked.


🌎 The Global Rise of a Vintage Thai-Chinese Kopitiam

Promoting an “All-day American breakfast since 1933” on their Facebook page, the shop draws a fascinating crowd. While you will spot plenty of local regulars, foreign tourists often outnumber them.

The shop’s international fame skyrocketed before the pandemic when a Japanese magazine featured its timeless aesthetic. Soon after, it captured the hearts of Chinese travelers, followed by a massive surge on social media. Thanks to TikTok and Facebook, On Lok Yun is now a global bucket-list spot attracting Indian, European, and Southeast Asian visitors who appreciate its nostalgic, untouched vintage charm and incredibly affordable prices.


🍞 The Breakfast Spread: Hits & Misses

We ordered a mix of classic breakfast items to sample the menu:

  • The American Classics: The cocktail sausages, ham, and bacon are a fairly standard, straightforward affair. Nothing mind-blowing, but comforting.
  • The Eggs: The soft-boiled eggs were executed perfectly.
  • The Star of the Table: The butter and sugar toast was the absolute highlight—noticeably better, fluffier, and more satisfying than what you get at nearby rival Easae.

Our total bill came out to a very wallet-friendly 195 Baht.

An Honest Note for Malaysian Foodies: If you are coming from Malaysia, you will likely find better, more robust kopitiam food back home. That being said, On Lok Yun is still absolutely worth visiting—not just for a quick bite, but for the living history and the unparalleled warmth of the experience.


💚 Service Straight From the Heart

What truly made our morning unforgettable was the heartwarming hospitality of Uncle Chang.

He noticed we were eating our fried breakfast items plain, without touching any condiments. In a flash, he personally prepared a side dish featuring a custom blend of four different sauces, presenting it with a smile and explaining that it offers the perfect balance of flavors.

Our table also came with a complimentary glass of hot Chinese tea. The moment Uncle Chang saw our glasses running low, he eagerly rushed over to refill them. In a recent interview, he mentioned that he proudly carries on his mother’s philosophy of customer service: never overcharge, and serve every single customer whole-heartedly.


☘️ The Quest for Their Traditional Pandan Custard

One thing I am incredibly keen to try on my next visit is their highly sought-after Traditional Pandan Custard (Kaya). Finding a truly great pandan kaya close to home is tough, and On Lok Yun puts an immense amount of effort into crafting theirs the old-school way:

  • 🌿 Made with 100% real pandan leaves and genuine palm sugar.
  • 🥥 Enriched with pure, fresh coconut milk.
  • Strictly NO dairy ingredients, butter, artificial cream, or condensed milk.
  • Free from artificial coloring and preservatives.

Because it is entirely natural, the coconut aroma is beautifully balanced and rounded out by the real palm sugar and fresh pandan fragrance.

⚠️ Take Note: This traditional pandan custard is strictly available on Saturdays, Sundays, and Public Holidays. Huge crowds and long queues are standard on weekends, so you will definitely want to time your morning visit carefully!
